"What happened last week in Albany was the result of a months-long legislative effort in Congress. I fought to ensure that the Administration and Congressional GOP leaders did not gut the CDBG program. By working with Democrats and Republicans, we were able to craft an appropriations bill (H.R. 7148) that got bipartisan support to become law at the beginning of the year, in January. The law provides Fiscal Year 2026 funding for several federal departments, agencies, and programs – including CDBG. https://t.co/G5mcVMCBmj"

Recent Activity
"Albany recently hosted an event at which the Georgia Department of Community Affairs presented six municipalities with Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) awards. This program allows the federal, state, and local government to work together to make crucial investments in high-cost infrastructure and facilities projects without straining local community budgets or forcing local tax or rate increases. https://t.co/vERqBhoO7w"
"When the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced it would gut billions of dollars from mental healthcare and drug treatment programs and jeopardize progress we have made since 2024 on reducing overdose deaths, I worked with my colleagues in Congress to urge the Administration to reverse course, which it did. https://t.co/DnrFWsxULd As a senior member of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, I have worked with Democrats and Republicans to protect and fund the programs that allow Congress to work with Georgia and our local communities to make sure people have access to affordable healthcare close to home and resources to fight hunger."
"Over half of Georgia's middle and high school girls experience signs of depression. Safety and economic strains on families were contributing factors. https://t.co/Ua7CPkPrAc Forty-four percent of Georgia households are unable to afford basic household needs. That is due, in part to the fact that the cost of putting dinner on the table, filling the gas tank, and being able to afford health insurance have skyrocketed in the last year and a half. I am constantly working hard in Congress to keep healthcare costs affordable, protect vital services, and I stood against cuts to food assistance programs that help the elderly, school children, and their families. It is why I opposed the big, ugly bill passed over a year ago which gutted Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP, and let enhanced tax credits lapse for the Affordable Care Act."
"Cairo is working with the state of Georgia to support affordable housing. The Georgia Initiative for Community Housing is part of Georgia's Department of Community Affairs and funded, in part, by USDA Rural Development. https://t.co/fAWibnCGvb As the top Democrat on the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee that oversees and funds USDA, I have continually fought for programs that support rural communities. Unfortunately, chaotic tariffs and the Administration’s distractions with unauthorized wars in the past year have distracted it from tackling housing affordability and disrupted supply chains. Nonetheless, I voted with Democrats and Republicans to pass the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act which would tackle some of the underlying causes of high housing prices. It became law without President Trump’s signature. And in January, as a senior leader of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, I helped pass a bipartisan appropriations law that will help keep housing affordable and safe, including the HOME Investment Partnerships, Homeless Assistance Grant program, and Lead Hazard Reduction Grant Program."
"And different communities have different housing challenges. As co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Military Families Caucus, last year I introduced a bill to improve military housing with my Republican co-chair, Congresswoman Kiggans of Virginia. https://t.co/lbba2SgVb4 I will continue to work hard, across the aisle where possible, to make Congress is a reliable partner to our state and local leaders so that we can work together to make housing more affordable and safe for everyone."
"As co-founder and co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Military Family Caucus, I have worked across the aisle to make spouse employment and military family stability priorities in Congress. One example is my bipartisan work with Congresswoman Jen Kiggans to introduce the STAY Act, which would require the Pentagon to examine options for reducing the frequency of military moves. We introduced the bill last autumn, shortly after the 2025 Military Family Summit we co-hosted at Fort Benning that summer. https://t.co/uI8Ot2R7jy I am working hard in Congress for military families in Southwest and Middle Georgia and across our nation, and supporting military spouses strengthens military readiness."
"Military spouses should not have to start their careers over every time their families receive orders to move. The Military Spouse Commission’s examination of ways to expand employment programs is a welcome opportunity to build on that work. Success should mean spouses finding jobs, keeping their careers on track, and strengthening their families’ financial security. https://t.co/H65ynQWGOL"
"Yesterday, as I stood with the leaders of Blakely, Camilla, Donalsonville, Statesboro, Vienna, and Thomasville, everyone shared how important CDBG grants are for communities and the immense good that these federal funds do: - sewer and drainage improvements in Blakely, Statesboro, and Vienna to protect neighborhoods and homes by preventing backups and flooding - ensuring families on Palmer Street in Camilla have clean water when they turn on the tap - making sure that fire hydrants along several blocks in Donalsonville have reliable water lines - building a new domestic violence shelter in Thomasville These are big projects that would put a huge strain on these towns without federal assistance and require huge increases in local taxes or utility rates to cover the costs. Sharing the burden up front allows these improvements to be made without breaking the bank locally and creates safer, more productive communities."
"I was proud to join GA Department of Community Affairs Commissioner Christopher Nunn and Deputy Commissioner Carter in Albany as they presented Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) awards to six Georgia municipalities, five of which are in Georgia’s Second Congressional District. CDBGs are distributed through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to states, like Georgia, which – in turn – award the funds for projects at the local level. The program is based on the principal that the people closest to the problem know best how to solve it. It works, because Congress continues to be a reliable partner, with Georgia, and these communities to invest in these projects that improve the quality of life for Georgians. Unfortunately, GOP leaders in the Administration and Congress have repeatedly proposed eliminating the program, but I have repeatedly fought against these efforts as a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee."
